My longtime favorite lip balm had changed. The texture and flavor were just off. I wasn’t sure if it was all in my head or if they had changed their formula. As a curious person, I jumped down the rabbit hole and learned that my favorite “Natural” lip balm brand had been acquired by a large, multinational company. The formula HAD changed! They swapped all-natural ingredients for lower quality ingredients of “Natural Origin.”

I spent years trying different lip balms, thinking I’d find one that met my, what I thought were, basic standards. I wanted something simple, with clean ingredients, that felt great on my lips and smelled refreshing. This was harder than I thought so I decided to try to make my own. 

After learning the basics of lip balm making, I started tinkering with different ingredients and testing my creations. Out of sheer abundance, I started giving the extra tubes of lip balm away, using the feedback from my friends and family to improve the recipe. 

When my stash ran out, I turned to beef tallow, straight from the jar, to soothe my chapped lips. I had heard about the benefits of tallow, and it felt incredible on my lips. So, I decided to rework my formula, but this time, with beef tallow as the hero ingredient. After tweaking and testing the new tallow-based formula, FAT LIP was born.
